When you see a laser cut wood owl or fox with depth, shadow, and dimension, where different parts seem to float in front of each other. That is not one piece of wood.

That is 9 separate pieces stacked and glued together. Each piece was cut from its own layer in the design file, painted individually, then assembled in order from bottom to top.

That is what a multilayer laser cut file is. Here is how it works.

What Is Inside a Multilayer File

Layer 1 goes down first. Layer 9 is the face of the finished piece.

A multilayer file is a single download that contains all the layers of a design in one file. When you open it in LightBurn or Illustrator, you see all the layers arranged side by side from left to right. The leftmost layer is the bottom piece, the one you place down first. The rightmost layer is the top piece, the face of the finished design.

A typical multilayer design from LaserCutiny has 9 layers. Each layer is a distinct shape that, when stacked in order, builds up the 3D relief effect you see in the finished piece.

Each layer includes all 6 file formats: SVG, DXF, AI, EPS, PDF, and DWG. You use whichever format your machine accepts: SVG for Glowforge, DXF for xTool and LightBurn.

The key difference from a single-layer file: A single-layer file produces one piece of wood with engraved detail on top. A multilayer file produces 9 separate pieces that you assemble by hand. The laser does the cutting. The depth and dimension come from stacking.

How to Cut a Multilayer File

The cutting process is the same as any laser file. Open the layer in your software, set your material and speed/power, and cut. The difference is that you repeat this 9 times, once for each layer, each on its own sheet of 3mm Baltic birch.

One rule matters here: cut from the inside out. On each layer, if there are interior details to engrave, do those first. Cut the outer outline last. If you cut the outline first, the piece loses its support from the surrounding sheet and can shift slightly. That shift, even 0.5mm, shows up as misalignment when you stack the layers.

Keep each piece on the laser bed until you are ready to move it. Do not flip pieces over or stack them before assembly. Small scratches on the face surface are hard to sand out without losing detail.

Label each piece as you cut it. Write the layer number lightly on the back with a pencil the moment it comes off the bed. Once 8 similar-looking pieces of wood are sitting on your table, it is very easy to lose track of which is which. A pencil mark takes two seconds and saves a lot of confusion during assembly.

Paint Before You Glue

Painting each layer individually before assembly gives a much cleaner result than painting after gluing.

Paint or stain each layer before you glue them together. This is the step most beginners skip, and it is why some finished pieces look muddy instead of having crisp color separation between layers.

Once layers are glued together, you cannot get paint into the narrow gaps between them. Any unpainted edges at the seam line show as raw wood against painted surfaces and look unfinished. Painting each layer individually while it is still flat takes more time but produces a much cleaner result.

Let each layer dry completely before assembly. Gluing onto wet or tacky paint creates weak bonds and can cause layers to shift during drying.


How to Assemble: Layer by Layer

Assembly goes from the bottom layer up, following the left-to-right order of the file. Layer 1 (leftmost in the file) goes down first. The last layer goes on top.

  • 1Work on a flat, clean surface. Any surface wobble becomes permanent once the glue dries.
  • 2Apply white craft glue (wood glue or PVA) to the back of each layer before placing it. Use a small brush or your finger to spread a thin, even coat. Too much glue squeezes out the sides and dries visible.
  • 3Place the layer down and align it carefully using the design's visual features as your guide. Most designs have a clear outer frame or silhouette that makes alignment straightforward.
  • 4Press firmly and hold for 30 seconds before moving to the next layer. White craft glue has enough open time to let you reposition slightly if needed, but set it before adding the next piece.
  • 5Once all 9 layers are stacked, place a heavy flat object on top (a book, a cutting board, anything flat and heavy) and leave it for at least 2 hours. This keeps everything flat and ensures a tight bond between layers.
  • 6Let the fully assembled piece rest for 24 hours before hanging or handling. White glue reaches full strength overnight, not in the first hour.
Do not rush the glue-up. The most common assembly mistake is stacking all 9 layers too quickly and discovering that the bottom layers shifted before the glue set. Work one layer at a time, confirm alignment, then move to the next.

Why Multilayer Is Harder Than Single-Layer (And When It Is Worth It)

Multilayer projects take significantly more time than single-layer cuts. You are cutting 9 separate pieces, painting 9 separate pieces, and assembling 9 separate pieces. A single-layer door hanger takes 20 minutes start to finish. A multilayer wall art piece takes a full afternoon.

The mistakes that are easy to fix on a single-layer piece (a slightly off cut, a smudged edge) are harder to fix when they are buried inside a glued-up stack.

What you get in return is a finished piece that looks like nothing a single-layer file can produce. The depth from 8 stacked layers of 3mm Baltic birch is 24mm total, almost an inch of physical relief. In good lighting the shadows between layers give the piece a sculptural quality that justifies the extra work, especially for wall art and display pieces.

For production selling, single-layer pieces are faster and more consistent. For statement pieces, gifts, and premium-priced items, multilayer is hard to beat on visual impact.


What to Check Before Buying a Multilayer File

Not all multilayer files are built the same. Before buying, check these:

  • Is the layer order clear? The file should make it obvious which layer goes where. At LaserCutiny, layers are numbered 1 to 9 inside the file. Layer 1 is the bottom, Layer 9 is the top.
  • Does the seller show a real assembled photo? A digital render tells you what the design looks like on screen. A photo of a real assembled piece tells you the layers actually fit together and the proportions work in real wood.
  • What is the recommended material thickness? Most multilayer designs are built for 3mm. Using 6mm changes the total depth and the proportions of the finished piece significantly.
  • How many layers are there? More layers means more cutting time, more painting, and more assembly. A 4-layer file is a reasonable first multilayer project. A 9-layer file is rewarding but takes patience with the assembly.
